CBD pre-rolls are rapidly becoming a new favorite among cigarette smokers looking to quit their unhealthy nicotine habit. Forget the nicotine patch, hypnosis, behavioral therapy, yoga, or going “cold turkey.’ Many smokers are replacing their unhealthy cigarette habit with CBD pre-roll.
What is CBD Preroll?
CBD pre-rolls are simply a pre-rolled ‘joint’ but made from CBD bud, not marijuana bud.
What is the difference? Well, two big points —
- CBD bud is federally legal since the 2018 farm bill.
- CBD flowers cannot make you high.
CBD flower, or CBD bud, is harvested from the hemp plant. Although hemp and marijuana are biologically the same species – primarily Cannabis sativa — hemp is legally defined as having less than .3 percent THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. Marijuana, on the other hand, typically has 10 percent or more THC (some strains have more than 20 percent).
But, hemp still has CBD, or cannabidiol, one of the 100 organic compounds found in the cannabis plant. High-CBD hemp has been purposefully bred to produce high amounts of CBD. CBD pre-rolls then, are simply joints you can buy, ‘pre-rolled’ from hemp CBD buds, rather than marijuana buds. They look and smell the same.
CBD flower bud is rolled into joint papers to create pre-rolls, though many CBD pre-rolls go the extra mile and are rolled from natural hemp-derived papers.
How Does CBD Pre-rolls Help You Quit Smoking?
There are many ways that cigarette smokers use CBD pre-rolls to help them quit smoking. The most obvious benefit is that smoking CBD pre-rolls give them the social and physical associations with ‘smoking’ without the harmful effects of nicotine. Simply put, when they feel the urge to have a smoke, they can choose to smoke a CBD pre-roll instead of a cigarette.
CBD pre-rolls have many other benefits, linked to the many phenomenal positive effects of CBD itself. CBD works with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. It acts upon the natural CBD1 and CBD2 receptors in our body, stimulating the endocannabinoid system. This creates homeostasis that works to reduce pain sensation and decrease inflammation.
Studies have also shown that CBD can alleviate addiction urges. A 2017 study showed that CBD was able to reduce addiction cravings for heroin addicts. Plus, we already know, from many published studies, that CBD reduces anxiety, depression, and insomnia. These are symptoms that smokers trying to quit their nicotine habit struggle with on a daily basis.
CBD Prerolls Versus Vaping CBD?
Some cigarette smokers switched to vaping as a more socially acceptable way to smoke. Certainly, you can vape CBD as well. But when it comes to the ultimate benefits of CBD, pre-rolls are the way to go. Smoking CBD flower is the fastest way to experience the positive effects of CBD. Smoking CBD dramatically increases the CBD’s bioavailability, especially over topical or oral ingestion of CBD, with up to a 50 to 60 percent absorption rate. (Versus ingestion typically only has about 15 percent absorption).
And smoking CBD pre-rolls come without any of the potential hidden dangers associated with vaping. CBD pre-rolls are all-natural. Just the paper and the CBD flower. Interestingly enough, a 2013 study showed that vaping CBD reduced cigarette use by up to 40 percent in smokers that weren’t even trying to quit cigarettes. With this sort of results for vaping, plus knowing that CBD pre-rolls work even better as far as alleviating nicotine addiction, it is no wonder that smokers are flocking to cannabis stores to purchase CBD pre-rolls.
Are CBD Prerolls Legal?
CBD pre-rolls smell and look just like marijuana joints, so many new customers wonder if they are indeed legal, especially in states that have not legalized it.
The answer itself is complicated and depends on the state.
Federally, all hemp products were declared legal in the 2018 Farm Bill, including CBD pre-roll. However, some states have chosen to ban smokable hemp, including pre-rolls, because they confused their police forces. Simply put, police officers could not tell the difference between legal ‘hemp’ bud versus illegal marijuana bud.
Some states have banned smokable hemp though in some cases, they have banned the sales of smokable hemp, but not smoking it. CBD pre-rolls can be legally shipped across state lines, so even if your state the local cannabis shops can’t legally sell your CBD pre-rolls, you can order it online for delivery.

Are Smoking CBD Prerolls Harmful?
Anytime you inhale smoke into your lungs, there is potential for harm. There have been studies that have shown the respiratory effects of smoking CBD. However, the most significant detrimental impact of smoking cigarettes is nicotine. And CBD pre-rolls have exactly zero of that!
Also, CBD is associated with some minor side-effects in some people. Including —
- Mild Nausea
- Dry Mouth
- Changes in mood or appetite
Remember, however, that smoking cigarettes are the leading cause of lung cancer and contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) ailments. There are NO benefits to smoking nicotine cigarettes. People do it, typically, because they can’t stop. Overall, the positive benefits of CBD itself, it’s ‘addiction-beating’ components, plus replacing harming nicotine cigarettes with much LESS harmful CBD pre-rolls, is a win-win.
