Wait a minute… is that CBD or a joint? The answer is yes to both of those questions!
Like many new CBD and smokable hemp fans, you and your friends may be confused about what a CBD preroll is. Since, it looks, confusingly precisely the same as a marijuana preroll. Or, as we all call them from our high school days, a “joint.”
No, this isn’t some conspiracy to confuse illegal marijuana joint with a legal CBD preroll (despite what the police might think). The problem is there is very little difference other than one BIG thing — a marijuana joint gets you high, a CBD preroll does not!
If your confused, well, welcome to the crowd. We can thank the 2018 Farm Bill for that, which defined the same plant species, Cannabis sativa as potentially two different compounds in the eyes of the law. Cannabis sativa plants, which test over .3 percent THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), are considered “marijuana.” That is not federally legal, and THC is listed on the federal Controlled Substances Act. But, Cannabis sativa plants that test under .3 percent are federally legal, and we call them ‘hemp.’
Yes, we know, it seems a bit of a silly way to differentiate the same plant. Mainly since the high THC marijuana strains currently sold in head shops (in legal states) usually contain at least 10 percent THC, if not more than 20 percent. However, after 80 plus years of complete federal cannabis prohibition, it was a relief to have a narrow definition of legal hemp available for legitimate breeders to grow and sell.
Not to mention the cannabis plant is amazing. And once the writing was on the wall that legal, low THC hemp was on the horizon, cannabis breeders like the talented folks at Colorado Breeders Depot began selecting for low THC/high CBD strains to meet those definitions. A few years past hemp legalization, we see an increasingly more extensive selection of hemp varietals available to the public. So, this gets us back to the CBD preroll issue.
Yep, it’s that basic. A CBD preroll is a joint pre-made by a manufacturer from low THC, federally legal hemp flower.
Just like marijuana prerolls, the main benefits of buying a CBD preroll is the convenience. The manufacturer does all the work for you. No grinding, loading a bong, or careful rolling involved. Unpackage your preroll and you’re ready to go. Most are also loaded with a filter, or a crutch, at the base for a better smoking experience. They may come wrapped in hemp paper or even a dried hemp leaf for a complete ‘hemp’ smoking experience.
If you like the ceremony and ritual of rolling your own, there is no need to order prerolls. On the other hand, if you are looking for something easy, pleasurable, and convenient, a CBD preroll is the way to go.
As we have already determined, a CBD preroll won’t get your high. So, why bother?
Well, for many people who enjoy smoking CBD hemp flower (either as preroll or grinding their own), skipping the high is the whole point. You can still enjoy the tradition and relaxing effects of smoking cannabis without the associated ‘stoned’ effect. Also, CBD, or cannabidiol, is well-known to have a host of benefits that go with it. CBD can help with pain and anxiety and assist you in falling asleep. It is well known as a replacement for tobacco in helping cigarette smokers looking to kick the habit.
If you are looking to get CBD benefits, smoking it versus ingesting CBD oil or applying a topical will produce more immediate and intense effects. Smoking has been shown to increase bioavailability. This means it absorbs into your circulatory system and bloodstream faster than if you ingested or applied it. It also is absorbed in a higher concentration with the effects felt within three minutes or almost directly after use.
Anytime you inhale something, there is a potential for an unforeseen long-term effect on your lungs. Studies have shown that long-term smoking of even high CBD can potentially lead to respiratory issues. However, compared to the well-known hazardous effects of nicotine cigarettes, CBD prerolls are relatively benign. Vaping was considered less harsh on the lungs until the well-publicized scare during 2019 with a rash of vape-related illnesses and deaths. Eventually linked to poor regulation of the vaping market and harmful additives vaping manufacturers were adding, it did raise concern over the safety of vaping CBD.
Smoking prerolls solves that potential risk, they are simply CBD flower, already ground up, packed, rolled and ready to go.
If you would like to try for yourself the benefits and convenience of CBD prerolls, give us a shout at Colorado Breeders Depot. We’ll hook you up with one of our in-house bred, raised, and made high CBD low THC prerolls.
